Een week geleden meldden wij dat Media Player 8 vastgebakken zat in Windows XP. CNet wist echter de hand te leggen op een versie en concludeert dat de speler eenvoudig is te installeren op computers die draaien op Windows ME of Windows 2000. Een aantal functies ontbraken echter, zoals de mogelijkheid om DVD's af te spelen en CD's te branden.
David Gillet van onderzoeksbureau Forrester vermoedt dat het losmaken van Media Player 8 van WindowsXP een reactie is van iemand, die het niet eens is met het feit dat de speler vastgemaakt is aan het nieuwe OS. Microsoft waarschuwt gebruikers Media Player 8 niet zomaar te installeren, omdat 'de oorsprong van de bestanden onbekend is en installatie van het programma problemen kan opleveren voor de pc', aldus Jonathan Usher (product manager bij Microsoft). CNET News.com tested the program, which is about 30MB in size uncompressed, and found it installed easily on notebooks running Windows Me and Windows 2000. But while the program claims to be Windows Media Player 8, build 4228, the user interface and functions appear nearly identical to the current version 7. The most recent version available with Windows XP is 8, build 4348.
