Sony is bezig met het ontwikkelen van een Napster-achtig programma om films mee te downloaden. Verschil zal zijn dat er hierbij wel betaald zal moeten worden. Sony denkt dat de filmbedrijven sneller werken dan de 'piraten' en hierdoor de strijd zullen winnen, in tegenstelling tot de muziekbusiness. Ik denk zelf dat Sony het illegale circuit behoorlijk onderschat. Het zal mij benieuwen hoe lang het nog duurt voordat er een film-filesharing programma is dat net zo ingeburgerd is als Napster nu. Dit zal toch niet kunnen worden voorkomen:
Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. is preparing a trial to securely download movies over the Internet. The trial is planned to take place at the end of this year.
"We believe that movie business must not wait like the music business, until Napster or some other equivalent steals our movies," said Howard Stringer, chief executive officer of Sony Corp. of America, and acting chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.
Sony did not disclose how it will download large content such as movies, but the company is working with Image Works in California to develop software for secure downloading. "We think we are certainly ahead of any studio in building software for movie downloading," Stringer said. "We are talking to other studios about this."
"I think movie companies will beat the pirate," he said. "The movie companies are working faster than those pirates."
