The addition of 70 new Streaming SIMD instructions, formerly known as Katmai New Instructions (KNI), is the more significant modification of the Pentium III. Similar in principle to MMX, the new instructions enhance floating point performance by allowing the processor to work on multiple pieces of data with a single instruction. Programmes, however, have to first be specially optimized before they can take advantage of this feature. Although this prevents many applications from realizing the benifit of the new instructions, large performance improvements of up to 35% can be achieved by SIMD optimized software.
