NeoMagic heeft bekend gemaakt dat het stopt met de produktie van videochips voor notebooks. Het bedrijf was in die markt behoorlijk succesvol, hoewel hun produkten wegens het ontbreken van 3D accelleratie inmiddels als inferieur beschouwd worden. NeoMagic wil zich nu toe gaan leggen op de ontwikkeling van produkten voor draadloze communicatie, een gebied waar het tot op heden geen aantoonbare ervaring heeft:
NeoMagic Corp., one of the leading suppliers of notebook-PC graphics chips, is exiting the graphics business in favor of wireless communications.[...] NeoMagic, a pioneer in embedded DRAM, will lay off 35% of its workforce and reorganize its corporate structure as part of the realignment. The company's embedded DRAM expertise will be refocused toward three areas: MPEG-4 video codecs, broadband wireless communications, and "Internet system knowledge with system-on-chip integration."
NeoMagic has no identifiable expertise in wireless technology, and it was unclear just how the company intends to take on the rapidly growing, but fiercely competitive, market. Company executives were not immediately available for comment.
