AddedChanged
- Edit text blocks in the pdf itself. Click a paragraph to put the cursor in it; while you type it looks exactly as it will on the page (same font, size, line spacing and line breaks). Click next to it or press Esc when you are done. The old text really leaves the file instead of being covered up. PDFixer keeps the original font when it may, and tells you when it has to use another one.
- Handles on a text block: drag a corner or side to change the width; the text flows again immediately. Drag the border of an open block, or the block itself, to move it. Lines that would run over other text turn red before anything changes in the pdf.
- Select and align. Drag a frame to select text lines and placed objects (Shift+click adds or removes, Ctrl+A selects the page). With two or more selected, a small bar aligns them left, centre or right, spaces them evenly or deletes them; the same choices are in the right-click menu. Drag the selection to move it. Text lines move in the pdf itself, in one undo step.
- Tabs. Open several pdfs at once, each in its own tab at the top of the window, with a start tab on the left. Every tab keeps its own changes, undo history, page and zoom. Opening a file that is already open takes you to its tab. Opening a pdf from File Explorer while PDFixer is running adds a tab to that window. Close a tab with its cross, the middle mouse button or Ctrl+W; Ctrl+Shift+T reopens it. Switch with Ctrl+Tab or Alt+1 to 9. When there are more tabs than fit, scroll the tab bar or pick one from “All tabs”, which has a search box. Closing PDFixer with unsaved work in several tabs asks once, with a list.
- Fill in forms. Form fields that are already in a pdf can now be filled in: click a text field and type, tick check boxes, pick from a list. Fillable fields are shaded light blue. With the Input field panel open you can move, resize or delete existing fields; right-click a field for the same choices. Tab and Shift+Tab go through all fields, including check boxes and across pages; Space ticks a check box. Required fields have a red border, date and number fields check what you type, and “Clear all fields” is in the right-click menu.
- Create form fields. Choose text, multiple lines, check box or date when you place a field. The field starts empty; its label appears in small grey text below it and as a tooltip that screen readers read out. “Show the label next to the field” is on each time you open the panel, so no field ends up without a visible name by accident. Fields have a thin grey border, so they show in every pdf reader, and can be marked Required or Read only. A read-only field gets a fixed value that you enter when you place it, such as a reference number.
- Fill in a signed form without breaking the signature. When the signature allows filling in, PDFixer keeps the signed file exactly as it was and adds your entries after it, the way Acrobat does. The signature stays valid.
- Save a flattened copy. “Save flattened copy (no longer fillable)” puts the filled-in values on the page in a separate file, so the form itself stays fillable.
- Same size in the alignment bar gives selected objects the size of the first one you picked.
- Image behind the text. A layer button in the bar of a placed image puts it behind the text or back in front, with undo. When the page has a solid white background (common in pdfs from Word or a printer driver), that background is removed so the image shows; on a scanned page PDFixer tells you the image cannot show behind it.
- A move handle on an open text block: a small blue tab with arrows at the top left. Drag it to move a text box right after typing in it.
- “Text box on the page” in the Text panel: click for a text box or drag its width. The text uses the font, size and colour from the panel.
- Watermark font: choose a font installed on the pc (if it may be embedded) and bold on or off.
- Replace or remove letterhead after “Apply now”: choosing another set asks whether to replace it, and “Remove letterhead” is in the panel.
Fixed
- When a text block has to switch to another font because its own font is not on the pc, PDFixer now asks first, at the first letter that needs it; “No” undoes the typing. Before, you only heard it afterwards.
- After saving a notice at the bottom right shows the file name and folder, with “Open folder”. Confirmations appear at the top centre, and buttons in separate windows are called Save and Cancel.
- Images and stamps inside the pdf can be dragged like a text line. Before, a placed image could only be moved by dragging until you saved; after that it was only possible from the right-click menu. Pointing at one shows a frame and the blue move tab.
- Clicking the grey area next to the page clears the selection, closes an open text block and hides the frames; a chosen tool stays active.
- Letterhead on a landscape page keeps its proportions and is centred, instead of being stretched to the page.
- Importing letterhead: the size guideline is now 1 MB instead of 100 KB. Images above 2400 dpi are reduced to 1200 dpi, so text in a logo stays sharp. Letterhead that takes long to draw is reported (above half a second per page) or refused (above one second), files above 7 MB are refused, and “Use as is” is now the recommended choice.
- Smaller files: content that is no longer used anywhere in the pdf is left out when saving.
- Editing inside the pdf has been rebuilt. PDFixer now changes only what you edit and leaves the rest of the page exactly as it was: colours, images, spacing and the text layer stay intact, and nothing is ever covered with white. This applies to text blocks, moving and deleting lines, replacing a word (the rest of the line moves along, as in a word processor), and to shapes, lines and images: remove or move them, or replace an image. When something cannot be changed without affecting something else, PDFixer leaves it as it is and tells you why. Letterhead is no longer part of the editable text, so “select all and delete” leaves it in place.
- One undo history for everything, in the order you worked and across all pages, as in Acrobat. Before, placed objects and changes to the pdf had separate histories. Rotating, inserting pages, page numbers, making a document searchable, applying letterhead and saving can now all be undone too.
- “Reload original” is now “Revert to saved version…” at the bottom of the save menu, instead of in the letterhead panel. Revert can itself be undone with Ctrl+Z, and “No” is the default answer.
- When letterhead cannot be applied, the message now says why.
- “Place on page” in the Text panel now also creates a text block in the pdf, with handles, just like “Text box on the page”.
- Dragging on an empty spot now selects; a new text box comes from “Text box on the page”.
- The licence check is stricter about what counts as a valid licence, and licence problems are logged with the reason on the pc, so support can see what went wrong.
- Opening another file (recent list, Open, drag and drop) replaced the open document without asking, so switching files lost unsaved work. Another file now opens in its own tab.
- Fields in a pdf that was filled in elsewhere could not be clicked, filled in or removed in PDFixer.
- A new input field shrank to a thin bar when the document was saved. It now keeps the size you drew.
- Text in a tall input field now starts at the top and wraps inside the field, instead of running out of it on a single line.
- Characters such as Č, Ł and Ő now show in form fields; they used to be replaced silently.
- Adobe XFA forms are now detected. A form that also contains XFA becomes a regular pdf form when you fill it in; a form that is only XFA can be filled in only in Adobe Acrobat or Reader, and PDFixer says so.
- With some webcams the window for taking a photo of your signature stayed black. PDFixer now tries the other video formats the camera offers.
- An empty content stream was written in a form some pdf readers reject.
- A new cover-up box had no handles and could only grow or shrink with + and -, keeping its proportions. It now has handles, so you can drag it to any size and position, without a floating toolbar in the way. Delete it with the Delete key or by right-clicking it.
- Objects and a watermark from the previous document could end up on the next one.
- After “Save protected”, undo and the text editor stopped working.
- Ctrl+S on the sample file saved it in a temporary folder; PDFixer now asks where to save it.
- Text in an open text box did not count as a change: closing or opening another file could lose it, and Ctrl+S saved without it.
- If writing failed while saving over the open file (file in use, drive removed, disk full), the original could be left empty. PDFixer now writes next to the file first and then replaces it in one step.
- Saving normally after “Save protected” dropped your permissions password and restrictions, and a file with only restrictions became unprotected.
- Since 1.0.3, saved files had a cross-reference table in separate pieces. Some signing portals reject such a file, and Adobe reported the first signature as invalid once a second one was added. Saved files now have one continuous table.
- A stamp or image placed behind the text was drawn on top of it in the page thumbnail, and its thin edges still showed through the text on screen.
- Text in a standard font that is not embedded (Helvetica, Times, Courier) was reported as replaced when you typed new letters; it now stays itself.
- Letters typed after bold text came out in the regular weight, because the bold font was not found on some Windows installations; the screen showed a simulated bold. PDFixer now finds the real bold font, and tells you when it has to use another one.
- Typing characters that were not yet used on the page made them overlap.
- Aligning or moving a selection could put a line on top of other text without any warning; that line now turns red before anything changes.
- Editing text next to an empty table cell could split a word in two.
- “Shrink and use” when importing letterhead did not make images smaller.
- Editing text on a page with colours in an ICC or CMYK colour space (common in PDF/A files and pdfs printed from a browser) turned coloured and white areas of the page black.
- A heading directly above a paragraph was treated as part of it, so editing the paragraph set all of it in the heading’s size and weight. Text in a clearly different size is now a separate block, and a block takes the style of most of its text.
- Clicking a very large letter could make the text inside its frame disappear.
- Text that PDFixer had placed itself came back in Helvetica when you edited it again, and bold was lost.
- Placing the same text twice put both blocks exactly on top of each other.
- A placed text line could not be moved, and a space typed in a text block sometimes jumped to the next page.
- Aligning lines on a rotated page stacked them on top of each other.
- Editing a line that shared its height with letterhead text wrote the letterhead text a second time.
- Edited text with characters such as “Ł” or “ź” lost its word spaces when searched or copied, and could run slightly past the edge of the block.
- Deleting a line could also remove a line that had been moved almost on top of it.
- After Ctrl+Z on a placed object, the screen and the saved file could differ.
- Undo after rotating a page restored the position of an image but not its rotation.
