Software-update: AliasVault 0.29.0

AliasVault is een privacyfirst wachtwoord- en e-mailaliasmanager van Nederlandse bodem, waarmee voor iedere website een unieke identiteit en e-mailalias aan kunnen worden gemaakt. De software is opensource en volledig end-to-end versleuteld. Er kan van een publieke cloud gebruik worden gemaakt en het biedt ook de mogelijkheid om het volledig zelf te hosten via Docker. Clientsoftware is beschikbaar voor Android en iOS en er zijn extensies voor de gangbaarste webbrowsers. Het wordt door Leendert de Borst ontwikkeld, die ook hier op Tweakers actief is. Versie 0.29.0 is verschenen en de changelog daarvan ziet er als volgt uit:

What's Changed

This release makes it significantly easier to switch to AliasVault by introducing support for importing full vault archives (including attachments and custom fields) from popular password managers. It also improves the autofill experience across mobile and browser. In addition, this update brings more flexibility and control for self-hosted deployments, alongside a range of other usability improvements and bug fixes across the apps.

Highlighted new features/improvements

• Import full vault archives (including attachments and custom fields) from 1Password, Bitwarden and Proton Pass, making it much easier to migrate to AliasVault.

Proton heeft ook zo'n soort functie. Of gaat deze verder? Welke is aan te raden?

Ik denk dat ik hier dus even moet zeggen, Proton's functie is door hun overname en integrate van SimpleLogin, wat er inderdaad veel op lijkt, er zijn echter een paar verschillen, ik noem het hier SimpleLogin omdat dat het product is, maar is eigenlijk hetzelfde wat ProtonPass gebruikt(En ik gebruikte SimpleLogin voor de overname, en gebruik het nu via Proton):

1. Proton is niet self-hosted terwijl aliasvault dat well kan zijn
2. De aliases in AliasVault kun je niet mee verzenden, terwijl dat met SimpleLogin dus well kan, dus je kan dan bijvoorbeeld op een mail reageren(Als het bijvoorbeeld een support email is), inplaats van hoeven te reageren met een echt e-mail address

Ik denk dat overall, het heel snel een beter product wordt, en ik heb er alle en paar keer naar gekeken. Maar gecombineerd met punt 2, ga ik toch liever met Bitwarden, die soort-van integratie heeft met SimpleLogin, alleen dan wat moelijker(Moet API key elke keer invoegen per client voor de generatie), maar dan is Bitwarden well een meer bekenede en betrouwde partij. Maar ik welkom meer competitie in het veld.

Ik denk dat op het gebied van password managers, mijn recommendaties op dit moment zou Proton Pass of Bitwarden, bijde zijn bekende betrouwbaare partijen, hebben audits gehad en zijn open-source.

Als je wilt zelf-hosten, zou de recommendatie Vaultwarden zijn, maar AliasVault is zeker geen slechte optie.

Hangt ervan af of je het self-host of niet.

Puur kijkende naar als het in de cloud gehost word dan zijn er niet veel verschillen tussen de 2. Laatste 3 zinnen zijn de summary als je een snel antwoord wilt :P

Enige verschil is dat Aliasvault werkt als een mailinbox. Dus je maakt een alias aan en dat word meteen een mailinbox die je in Aliasvault zelf uit leest en die dan ook per account laat zien welke mails ervoodr aan komen. Dit maakt het zeer gemakkelijk om dingen als confirmation/mail TOTP codes of urls te krijgen zonder je mail te hoeven openen.
Belangrijke voor sommigen is dat je Aliasvault inclusief het aliasysteem op eigen hardware of cloudomgeving kan hosten.
Enige nadeel is dat het op dit moment nog niet mogelijk is mail door te sturen. Dus mail komt binnen op de alias inbox die je hebt ingesteld binnen Aliasvault maar er is op dit moment geen zend optie.

Protonpass forward mail gewoon naar een eigen mailbox binnen krijgt wat zeker handiger kan zijn en gezien je van hun mailsysteem gebruik maakt ben je niet afhankelijk van de nog nieuwere Aliasvault cloud of een self-hosted optie (natuurlijk ben je wel afhankelijk van Proton, maar die betaan al een goed tijdje en hebben genoeg kapitaal om alles perfect te laten runnen neem ik aan).
Enige nadelen zouden zijn dat alle mail via Proton servers gaat en je niet weet wie mee kijkt.. ik zou geen problemen hebben met Proton vertrouwen maar niet iedereen vertrouwd derde-partijen. fact of life :D

Beiden werken perfect, beiden kunnen custom domeinen gebruiken.
Enige is dus dat Aliasvault een self-hosted optie kan en dat de mail dus direct in de PW manager binnen komt (maar er op dit moment dus ook niet uit kan buiten verwijderen) terwijl Protonpass het dus mooi direct in je eigen mailbox laat binnen komen.
Aliasvault is wel nog flink in ontwikkelling dus dingen als TOTP autofill bij de mobiele app staan op de roadmap. Ook is er geen desktop client mocht je zo iets willen. Beiden zijn goede opties... in mijn goen gaat Aliasvault in de toekomst Protonpass en Bitwarden voorbij in features en functionaliteit, maar op dit moment zijn Protonpass en Bitwarden simpelweg net wat verder doorontwikkeld.
Aliasvault is gratis te gebruiken op dit moment dus als je echt ergens twijfeld zou je altijd gewoon wat kunnen proberen.
