Software-update: GetRight 5.2

Headlight Software heeft versie 5.2 van zijn downloadmanager na een vijftal bèta's de final-status gegeven. Met deze software kunnen afgebroken downloads worden hervat, kan een bestand van meerdere servers tegelijkertijd worden binnengehaald, en kan de computer na het downloaden automatisch worden uitgeschakeld. Onder de vernieuwingen treffen we onder andere ondersteuning voor de browsers van Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, Netscape 6 en 7, en is de maximale grote van bestanden die kunnen worden downgeload opgetrokken van 2GB naar maar liefst acht miljard GB. De release notes laten zien wat er allemaal sinds versie 5.02 is veranderd:

The Biggest Improvements:

• Increase from 32 bit numbers (which maxes out at about 2GB for a single file) to 64 bits (which is about 8 billion Gigabytes). Should be good for another 1000 years or so! (How your disk is formatted can limit file sizes too: FAT limit is 2GB, FAT32 limit is 4GB, NTFS is unlimited. Info from Microsoft.)
• Switched so the "by file type" Internet Explorer click monitoring uses a different method (now is a Browser Helper Object) which seems to have fewer quirks with Windows XP SP2 and a few other things. It's been the alternate method we referred people to try if they had problems, so really has been used by a lot of people over the years. Probably won't even notice any differences, if so, you can still use the "classic" method. There's a checkbox on the bottom of the Types & Options config page.
• Added built in click monitoring for many more browsers. Uses a plugin for Mozilla, Firefox, Netscape 6/7; with Opera it uses a feature to have Opera send the URL to another program.

Medium:

• Added MODE Z for FTP transfers. Compresses the transfer of files and directory listings. Will make a big difference especially if downloading text. Doesn't do it for ZIP, EXE, RAR, or other already compressed types; and FTP servers are only just starting to add the feature; but is pretty cool with the right data and a server that allows it! I've seen folder contents compressed over 90% in the GetRight Browser! The RaidenFTPD server does it and lists some other servers that do too!
• Added NTLM authorization.

Minor changes:

• Handle better if GetRight folder isn't writeable (for a user account, etc.) And some other things to do better with multple user accounts, especially if the account is has limited access.
• Fixed HTTPS with proxy servers, including proxy servers that need logins.
• A little tweaking to try and improve page processing speed for Synchronizer.
• Changed the "*.LOG" file format to make it much more readable.
• Added more things to get the right form for Login web pages with more than one.
• Added so Download Status shows the % and total sizes for selected items (so can select a bunch of files and see what the total size is, etc.)
• Some more smarts when getting to the end of a segmented download. If a mirror with a significantly faster transfer speed is known, and the last chunk will take more than a couple minutes, switch to that mirror.
• Fix a couple causes of crashes with Segmenting if the file isn't found.
• Don't let download windows be Maximized (could happen if Download Status was maximized and open a download.)
• Move some of the less commonly used config menus under the Advanced branch.
• Added tiny ToGetRight.exe program that just passes a URL on the command line to GetRight. It is much faster than doing the same by running GetRight.exe. For some click monitoring from Opera and the DownloadWith Mozilla plugin.
• Improved "close with browser" so it recognizes many more web browsers (Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, Netcaptor, etc.)
• Added "Saved To" column for History on Download Status.
• Added so if it can't remove .GetRight from a file, it sets so it will be removed when you reboot--so will get the name right eventually.
• Skip getting file date from FTP if Norton Internet Security is installed; it incorrectly thinks the message GetRight sends is a Denial of Service attack and stops GetRight.
• There's lots more too. Many more small and big improvements and fixes!

No offence, maar licentietype moet dat niet Adware oid zijn? Ik weet dat ik toen Getright eruitgegooid heb vanwege al die reclame.
Ben wel blij om te lezen dat er weer een product is wat mozilla/firefox ondersteunt, geeft een beetje een sneeuwbal effect

Hmm ik heb het net geinstalleerd, geen last van popups/adware of wat dan ook.. alleen dat ze graag willen dat ik register maar dat lijkt me normaal. Dus mij lijkt shareware als licentie wel goed.

Wat heeft het voor zin een limiet voor 8 miljard GB in te stellen ? Naast een grote harde schijf moet je dan toch ook wel een snelle internetverbinding hebben en dan nog een server vinden die files van 8 mld GB bevat.

Dat is waarschijnlijk niet zo zeer een expliciete keuze, als wel het logische gevolg van het omzetten van 32 naar 64 bits getallen. Daardoor wordt de maximale grootte met een factor 2^32 vergroot en dus ook de maximale grootte van een enkel bestand.
Is natuurlijk overkill maar programmeren met 35 bits integers is ook geen pretje

Het is dus een limiet waar je waarschijnlijk tijdens je leven niet tegenaan zult lopen. Effectief is het dan geen limiet meer, prima toch?

zodra jij iets van meerdere locaties gaat downloaden worden die locaties ook opgeslagen bij die site.

het is gewoon een logisch gevolg van het gebruik van 64 1'en en 0'en om een getal weer te geven ipv 32 stuks. de 8 miljard GB is geen bewuste keuze.

32 bits is te weinig, en de eerst volgende grootte om een integer in op te slaan is 64 bits.. simple as that. hij kan in een 64 bits integer wel een maximaal 33 bits waarde opslaan (4 gigabyte * 2), maar daar is niets mee te behalen; geen extra performance, en niet minder memory usage.

33 bits gebruiken van een 64 bits integer is omslachtig, kost meer programmeer werk en is trager dan de volledige 64bits te gebruiken. Ook kwa geheugenruimte maakt het niets uit, doordat er gewoon 64bits geregistreerd worden.

Waarom zoveel moeite doen om dingen te beperken?
Daarom 8miljard GB, omdat 2^64 zoveel is
