Software-update: Adobe Flash Player 32.0.0.101

Adobe heeft versie 32 uitgebracht van Flash Player en de Integrated Runtime. Deze browser-plugin maakt het mogelijk om Flash-content, waaronder zogenaamde rich Internet applications en streaming audio en video, af te spelen. Flash Player zit ingebakken in Google Chrome en Microsoft Edge, voor andere browsers zal het los geïnstalleerd moeten worden. Het gebruik is alweer een tijdje op zijn retour ten gunste van html5 en steeds meer browsers vereisen een extra muisklik om Flash-content alsnog af te spelen. Mac NPAPI Sandbox - Mozilla Firefox
The Mac NPAPI Flash sandbox is enabled by default on Firefox 62 and later. Disabling the sandbox requires using about:config to set "dom.ipc.plugins.sandbox-level.flash" to 0 and then restarting the browser. The sandbox is known to prevent the following features from working:

• Print to PDF from the Flash print dialog
• Print to “Open in Preview” from the Flash print dialog
• Quicklook in the File->Open dialog
• Saving files to the filesystem from a Flash applet
• Flash applets downloading and running the Adobe Air installer
• Flash triggering Adobe Air applications to run

Android AIR Runtime Play Store Availability
Adobe is unpublishing the shared AIR Runtime from the Google Play Store on September 11th, 2018. AIR applications that require the shared runtime will no longer be able to be able to access the required download from the Google Play Store. Adobe has not supported shared runtime packaging since AIR 26, and the vast majority of developers will not be impacted by this change. For those that still need access to the shared runtime APK, please see the Adobe AIR archive to download the appropriate version.

App Transport Security
With macOS 10.11, Apple has introduced App Transport Security (ATS) which mandates that applications use secure network connections over HTTPS only. Because this is a significant change, Apple has provided applications an override via NSAllowsArbitraryLoads which will allow insecure connections.
With AIR SDK 27, all AIR applications built for macOS will automatically have the NSAllowsArbitraryLoads key set as true in their info.plist file. This is a temporary solution. Apple may reject your application during the review process or disable the usage of NSAllowsArbitraryLoads in future OS updates. We recommend using secure network connections over HTTPS in your applications.

AIR tvOS Support Moved to Labs

Flash Player "Click to Play" Microsoft Office Support
Starting with Flash Player 30, existing “click to play” functionality for Microsoft Office version 2007 and earlier now applies to all Microsoft Office versions where Flash is allowed to run.

Ik vraag mij af hoeveel applicaties eigenlijk nog op Flash draaien anno 2018. Ik installeer het (mede doordat het in het verleden vele security issues heeft gekend) eigenlijk nooit meer en mis het ook totaal niet. Ik kan mij daarom nauwelijks nog voorstellen dat Flash nog gebruikt wordt. In een zakelijke omgeving allicht, maar daar zal dat ook een aflopende zaak zijn, mag ik hopen?

Heel veel (indie)games zijn in Flash gemaakt. En dan heb ik het niet over spelletjes in de tussenuren, maar ook werkelijke pareltjes zoals The Binding of Isaac, Don't Look Back, VVVVV, Samorost, Incredipede, Botanicula en vele anderen.

Er is dan geen budget of tijd om de game naar een nieuw platform te porten wat ook de voordelen van Flash (crossplatform, DRM) moet hebben.

Helaas is er geen platform dat Flash vervangt. In HTML5 kunnen assets en code nog makkelijk geript worden. Ook is het maar de vraag of het in elke browser werkt zoals het zou moeten.

Sowieso moet je bij elk alternatief van Flash meer aanleg voor techniek hebben dan bij Flash zelf.

Maar de games die je noemt hebben geen van allen de Flash player nodig. Binding of Isaac en VVVVV in elk geval al niet; die games heb ik toevallig en heb ik wel eens de folder van gezien.

De meeste van die games zijn inderdaad opnieuw uitgebracht waarbij ze gewrapped zijn in de director versie van flash.

Maar dan draaien ze nog op flash.

Volgens mij installeert geen enkel OS en/of browser het meer standaard mee. Daarom verbaasd het me des te meer dat het niet EOL is, maar er nog zo hardnekkig aan wordt doorontwikkeld.

Windows 10 heeft het standaard in Edge/IE en aanstaan. Je kunt het alleen uitschakelen maar niet verwijderen.

The EOL is 'end of 2020'. Nog een goeie 2 jaar support en dan is het gedaan.

En dat snap ik ook wel, als ik deze release note hierboven lees:

Mag hopen dat Apple dit inderdaad weigert voor nieuwe applicaties. Liefst ook voor legacy, maar daar is het voor bedoeld.
(Let op: 10.11 El Capitan is de release van derde kwartaal 2015. Dus 3 jaar na dato maakt Adobe hun produkt 'by default' onveilig!)
