SmoothWall GPL 1.0

Op SmoothWall.org lezen we het heugelijke bericht dat versie 1.0 van SmoothWall GPL is uitgekomen. Deze versie is niet meer dan 0.9.9 met alle voorgaande 21 patches geintegreerd en markeert het einde van de ontwikkeling in deze serie. Mensen die een router hebben die SmoothWall GPL versie 0.9.9 draait en alle patches tot en met 20 hebben geinstalleerd kunnen ook patch 21 downloaden, met hetzelfde resultaat:

About SmoothWall
SmoothWall was first released to the world in July 2000. Founded by myself and Lawrence Manning it was designed to produce a hardened internet firewall device, turning a server, workstation or reduntant PC into a replacement for a hardware firewall router often costing several thousands of dollars.

SmoothWall was designed from the ground up with specific aims.

to be easy to manage via a webbrowser
to support and compliment existing ISDN cards, Modems and network hardware seamlessly and support a vast array of connection methods and ISPs in over 40 countries
able to be installed by everyone from a home user to an IT technician
to offer support for webservers and servers having to live securely in a de-militarised zone
to take this product and shove it under the noses of the security vendors charging huge amounts of money for providing lesser product.

SmoothWall is designed by administrators and security people, priced at a price that is easy to access and with the GPL taster product you get a glimpse of something that the established security manufacturers and companies should be scared of. We're putting control BACK in the hands of the user, without the need for being ripped off with exorbatant hardware firewalls that are oversold and overpriced.

De makers van SmoothWall doelen op de (zeer dure) professionele firewalls. Met SmoothWall zou je voor een eurotje of vijf a tien een veilig netwerk kunnen hebben, heel wat beter dan enkele duizenden euro's.

Beetje kort door de bocht. Wil je de extra functionaliteit die een Firewall je biedt van een paar duizend Euro. Moet je bij Smoothwall ook allerlei pakket aanschaffen. (VPN, Content Filtering, etc.)

Daarnaast heb je een server nodig waar dat pakket op werkt, iets wat je bij een "hardware matige" oplossing ook niet nodig hebt.

Ik heb dit pakket met succes vanaf het begin gedraait, zowel op een 386 desktop als een oude tecra laptop in de stoppenkast.
Voor wat het doet is het een succes met grote S.

Als je inderdaad een firewall will met VPN en andere opties dan zit je waarschijnlijk niet meer in het markt segment van de GPL. Ook bedrijfsmatig is het nog steeds een uitstekende oplossing met veel controle en die extra features die je moet kopen.... nog steeds een betaalbare oplossing!

Op een server,... wat nou als je hardware kapot gaat... met een dedicated firewall (hardware matig) zit je ineens zonder... met SmoothWall is het een kwestie van overzetten op een tijdelijke PC of laptop en je firewall is weer up and running.

Ik heb Smoothwall thuis al geruime tijd draaien.

Een ouwe Pentium PC zonder monitor en keyboard staat in de tellerkast opgesteld. Het ding fungeert als router en firewall voor een klein netwerkje. Via een webbrowser kan ik zaken configureren, voor de rest hoef ik er niets mee te doen behalve af en toe een patch toevoegen.

Tot op heden een zorgeloos bestaan dus met voor mij drie duidelijke voordelen: geen nood aan toch nog relatief prijzige routertje, recyclage van een ouwbollig pctje en een crashvrij

en veilig bestaan.
