Software-update: Vuze 5.0.0.0

Versie 5.0.0.0 van Vuze is uitgekomen. Deze in Java geschreven Bittorrent-client, die vroeger onder de naam Azureus werd uitgebracht, heeft onder andere de mogelijkheid om prioriteit te geven aan individuele torrents of aan de afzonderlijke bestanden binnen een bepaalde torrent. Daarnaast heeft het programma een ingebouwde tracker, zodat het delen van eigen bestanden tot de mogelijkheden behoort. Verder kan de functionaliteit van Vuze door middel van plug-ins worden vergroot, zoals bijvoorbeeld met de Country Locator. Naast de standaardversie is er tegenwoordig ook een plus-uitvoering, die voor 25 euro een virusscanner biedt, evenals de mogelijkheid tot het branden van cd's en dvd's, en tot het al afspelen van media terwijl nog niet de volledige download binnen is. Het changelog van deze release ziet er als volgt uit:

Ik heb Azureus jarenlang gebruikt, Azureus was namelijk de enige client die correct wist/weet om te gaan met het 'Superseeding' protocol (de client meld aan de peer na een request dat hij niets heeft en stuurt vervolgens een willekeurig deel wat nog niet in de zwerm zit. Zodoende wordt éérst een hele copie de zwerm ingestuurd). Superseeding was destijds erg belangrijk voor mensen die geen snelle verbinding hadden maar wel iets wilden uploaden.

Het probleem met Azureus (en Vuze) is echter dat het nogal een resource-hog is en dat toch scheelt op een superzuinige mini 24/7-PC. Toen het er opaan kwam toch maar over naar uTorrent (ondanks dat deze echt minder efficiënt is als seeder, Azureus/Vuze zal namelijk altijd delen met lage availability voorrang geven, dat doet uTorrent niet, die reageert simpelweg op een request).

Azureus is nog altijd de beste MP3 downloader. Je vind er gewoon alles op. Voor torrents vond ik Vuze altijd het best, ook omdat je films gelijk kunt kijken zonder eerst extensies te moeten downloaden. Nu gebruik een NAS voor dit werk wat mij beter bevalt.

Azureus kun je altijd nog apart van Vuze downloaden. Had ze vroeger alle 2, totdat ik de NAS ging gebruiken.

Aangezien uTorrent met elke versie verslechterd, ben ik sinds kort overgestapt op Vuze. Het vreet weliswaar meer geheugen, maar als je computer toch genoeg geheugen heeft en snel is, kan ik het ten zeerste aanraden!

Ik heb lang uTorrent gebruikt, totdat deze op de commerciele tour ging. Nu gebruik ik qBittorrent welke ik iedereen kan aanraden.

Inmiddels heb ik Windows ingeruild voor Linux Mint (offtopic: had ik veel eerder moeten doen !!!). Tot mijn volle tevredenheid is er ook een Linux versie van qBittorrent .
