Software-update: Avast Antivirus 5.0 final

Alwil Software heeft versie 5.0 van zijn antivirusprogramma uitgebracht. Niet alleen het programma is vernieuwd, ook de namen zijn aangepast en de website is voorzien van een nieuw uiterlijk. Voorheen waren er de gratis Home-edition en de betaalde Professional-edition. De nieuwe namen zijn nu Avast! Free Antivirus en Avast! Pro Antivirus, om duidelijker aan te geven welke versie gratis is en welke niet. Daarnaast is er vanaf versie 5 een versie beschikbaar met als extra's onder andere een firewall en antispam, die de naam Avast! Internet Security draagt. Meer informatie over versie 5.0 is in dit blog te vinden, dit zijn de belangrijkste verbeteringen:

Core and detection

Antivirus and anti-spyware engine
State of the art scanning engine provides reliable protection against viruses, spyware and other forms of malicious software.

Real time anti-rootkit protection
Unique "on access" technology checks all kernel-mode drivers that the operating system is loading for signs of rootkit behavior. This enables even unknown rootkits to be detected and stopped before they can do any damage.

avast! Community IQ
Most samples we process come from sensors deployed throughout the avast! community in the Behavior shield and anti-rootkit modules. This is a unique source of data made possible only thanks to our huge user base. Most of the collected samples are analysed by a number of automated processes and only a small fraction of the samples need to be processed manually by our virus analysts.

Code emulator
When a suspicious executable is encountered (during both on-demand and on-access scanning), avast! is able to emulate the program’s code in an isolated environment. The code emulator is used for two purposes. First, it is used for generic unpacking. Secondly, it is used in the heuristics engine. Technically, this is done using dynamic translation, a method much faster than traditional emulation techniques.

Heuristics engine
Starting with version 5.0, avast! features a new heuristics engine designed to proactively detect malware undetectable with normal definitions. The heuristics engine is able to cover both binary (executable) and script malware.

Potentially unwanted programs detection
New in version 5.0, avast! now detects potentially unwanted programs, such as remote admin tools and commercial key loggers. Custom rules can be set for dealing with these types of programs.

Boot-time scanner
Allows you to scan your computer for infections before the operating system has started and before a virus can be activated (32-bit operating systems only).

Command-line scanner
Enables you to run a scan directly from the command line.

Wake-up for scan
Microsoft Windows is woken from sleep or hibernation mode, performs a scheduled scan, then returns back to sleep mode.

Scheduled scanning
Allows users to define the scan time and files to be scanned.

avast! Intelligent Scanner
Can reduce the number of required file scans by up to 80% through a white list of proven safe applications. Files identified as safe are not rescanned unless they change.

Shields

Behavior Shield
Monitors activity on your computer using a number of sensors (file system, registry and network based) and reports/blocks any suspicious behavior.

Behavioral Honeypots
avast! sensors identify and monitor suspicious file activity on selected computers, automatically submitting files to the Virus Lab for additional analysis.

File System Shield
Real-time scanning of opened/executed files.

Mail Shield
Scans all incoming/outgoing e-mails for malware. For MS Outlook, a special plug-in is used. Other email clients are protected by a generic POP3/IMAP4/SMTP proxy. New in version 5, the proxy also supports scanning of SSL communication (gmail.com, sympatico.ca, ….)

Web Shield
Scans all visited web pages and checks all files, pages and java scripts downloaded from the internet. Thanks to the Intelligent Stream Scan feature, the Web shield doesn't slow down your web browsing.

P2P Shield
Checks files downloaded using P2P programs. - ABC, Ares, Azureus, BearShare, Bit Torrent, BitComet, BitLord, BitPump, CZDC++, Direct Connect, eDonkey, eMule, iDC++, iMesh, Kazaa, Kceasy, LimeWire, Morpheus, Opera's DC++, Overnet, Qtrax, Shareaza, SoulSeek, StrongDC++, uTorrent, Vuze, WinMX, Winny2, Zultrax.

IM Shield
Checks files downloaded while using instant messaging or “chat” programs. - AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), Gadu-Gadu, gaim/Pidgin, Google Talk, ICQ, IM2 Messenger, Infium, Miranda, mIRC, MSN/Windows Messenger, Odigo, PalTalk Messenger, Psi Jabber Client, QIP, QQ, SIM, Skype, Tlen, Trillian, WengoPhone, XFire, Yahoo! Network Shield
Provides protection against network-based viruses. The module has two main components: a URL blocker, designed to block malicious URLs (as defined by the Virus Lab), and a lightweight intrusion-detection system.

Technologies that are not included in avast! Free Antivirus

Silent Firewall
The firewall enables you to control incoming and outgoing traffic from your computer. Protection is based on heuristic and behavioral analysis, and a white list of known safe applications. There are three network settings which can be changed depending on the type of connection.

Antispam
New comprehensive SPAM and fraudulent message filter. It works as a plug-in to MS Outlook and a generic POP3/IMAP4 proxy for other email clients.

avast! Sandbox
Enables potentially exploitable programs (such as web browsers) and/or suspicious executables to be run in a safe, virtual environment. The avast! Sandbox is unique as it runs on both 32 and 64bit platforms.

Is er nu iets gedaan aan 't probleem dat Avast een traag systeem (Atom, trage laptop) compleet lam legt als je 'm boot/uit-standby-haalt omdat ie dan zonodig METEEN wil gaan updaten (en wellicht nog wat andere dingen) wat minuten lang duurt?

Dat was voor mij de redenen om op genuine Windows systemen over te stappen naar Microsoft Essentials en "minder genuine" Windows systemen naar Panda Cloud Antivirus. Van beide merk je niks. Avira heeft ook afgedaan vanwege het geklooi met die popup en het retetrage updaten als je de gratis versie gebruikt.

Op te lossen door middel van "Settings> Troubleshooting> Load avast! services only after loading other system services". Werkt op trage systemen meestal prima.

Verder een zeer fijn programma. en de veranderingen die in 5 mee zijn gekomen zijn erg welkom

Al een tijdje geen gebruik gemaakt van Avast vanwege de irritante pop-ups die de gratis editie had; is dit er nu inmiddels uit gehaald? Kan het niet echt van de website afleiden of dit er niet meer in zit...

irritante pop-ups? Het enige wat je in de laatste versies krijgt is volgens mij rechtsonderin je beeld een melding als er een nieuwe versie is of als er updates geinstalleerd zijn, maar als je wilt kun je die uitzetten.

Ik heb totaal geen last van popups en ik gebruik Avast al meerdere jaren.
Het enige dat Avast van je vraagt, is je gratis licentiecode eens in de 14 maanden te vernieuwen.

Verder vind ik het gewoon een superieure scanner vergeleken bij de grote commerciële pakketten als McAfee en Norton.

Voor zover ik weet heeft Avast nooit pup-ups gehad. Gebruik zelf al jaren de gratis versie! Enkel wanneer er een update is geïnstalleerd krijg je daar een melding van, maar die verdwijnt ook weer automatisch en kan zelfs helemaal uitgeschakeld worden dus ik denk niet dat dit een echt argument is...
Als ik straks tijd heb ga ik deze nieuwe versie zeker eens proberen!

Ik denk dat je avast verwart met avira, die heeft wel pop-ups (welke je trouwens eenvoudig kunt uitschakelen).

Hoe verhoud deze scanner zich tot AVG? In AVG free zit bijvoorbeeld geen rootkit-scanner, wat erg jammer is, zit deze wel bij de gratis versie van Avast?

Ik heb geen idee hoe het zit met wat ze herkennen, maar ik merk nu al dat Avast veel minder aanwezig is (zolang je dat animated icoontje maar uitzet, dat leidt wel af ).

Waar AVG 8 bij mij nog vertraging gaf bij het openen van sommige folders (bv C:\Windows\Temp), opgemerkt omdat tijdens die momenten AVG ook omhoog schoot in CPU gebruik, is het na overstappen op deze Avast versie weer lekker snel. En dat is met gewoon alle scanners aangezet.

Gebruik het nu al een tijd niet meer, ben er vroeger van af gestapt omdat het ding te luid begon te loeien dat er ergens een virus was gevonden (als je dan nog niet doorhebt dat je bent geïnfecteerd vraag ik me af wat je nog achter een PC doet )

Dat blijk je dus uit te kunnen zetten in de instellingen.

Ik zit zwaar in overweging om deze scanner eens een kans te geven. Het lullige is dat het moielijk is te weten hoe goed ie is qua detectie, aangezien ik eigenlijk nooit last heb van virussen met andere scanners (avg, nod32). Ach, dan maar uit gaan van de positieve reacties van anderen.

fijne prog is dit, licht en effectief. Ik ga m testen. En idd je moet altijd ff die notifications en sounds uitzetten.. die zijn wel irritant

Idd erg fijn programma. Niet alleen fijn omdat ie licht is, het is één van de beste scanners in de wereld, gratis vanwege hun visie dat echte bestrijding begint bij een goede en kwalitaiteve verspreiding van de scanner, geen zware eisen en paketten.
Ik heb hem al jaren naar alle tevredenheid, weing tot eigenlijk géén storingen, geen merkbare invloed op geheugen/systeemsnelheid, altijd updates en verbeteringen.
Naar mijn mening bestaat er geen alternatief in de gratis viruswereld. Prijs/kwaliteit is eveneens onovertroffen

Real time anti-rootkit protection aanwezig.

De update van 4.8 naar 5.0 verliep vlekkeloos.
Interface ziet er nu lekker strak en een stuk moderner uit.
Een stuk overzichtelijker geworden.

Ik altijd zonder problemen Avast 4.x gebruikt.

Ook een tijdje Microsoft Security Essentials gebruikt, maar die gaf soms enorm 'lange' wachttijden en daar kon ik niet meer mee werken, die toen een maand uitgeschakeld, dus geen virusscanner.

En gister Avast 5 erop gezet, ziet er allemaal goed uit, niets mis mee. Alleen als ik een streaming filmpje (Youtube bijv.) kijk, en hij nog aan het bufferen / downloaden is legt het mijn complete PC lam. 100% CPU. Dus alles wat met Web te maken heeft uitgeschakeld, maar ook dat hielp volgens mij niet. Dus ik weet niet of Avast erop blijft.

Avira is daarin wel beter, maar die is helaas niet in het Nederlands wat dus niet zo'n goede optie is voor thuisgebruikers.
