Software-update: µTorrent 1.8 build 7398 alpha

De ontwikkelaars achter µTorrent hebben gisteren een nieuwe alpharelease uitgebracht van versie 1.8 van hun populaire bestandsuitwisselingsprogramma. µTorrent is een kleine en featurerijke BitTorrent-client met een lage processor- en geheugenbelasting. Deze release gaat vergezeld van een lange lijst met veranderingen en verbeteringen. Aangezien het hier om een vroege alpha gaat, raden de ontwikkelaars aan om deze versie in ieder geval niet zonder toestemming op private trackers te gebruiken. Hieronder is te vinden wat er allemaal veranderd is sinds de vorige vermelding in de Meuktracker:

Changes in version 1.8 alpha (build 7398)

• Change: better error when file exceeds filesystem size limit
• Fix: "<ERROR>" sometimes appearing in download limit in the transfer tab
• Fix: Logging options if "Log Traffic to Logger Tab" is chosen from the peers tab menu
• Fix: rare crash with hashfails
• Fix: season column showing episode for torrent items

Changes in version 1.8 alpha (build 7364)

• Feature: Users can now be more precise in the log options they want to display
• Change: When moving .torrent files to the completed torrent folder, uTorrent now will replace existing torrent files with the same name in the folder and create folders up to the completed folder if necessary (same behavior as when moving to the original torrent storage folder)
• Change: When enabling teredo at installation, hide the background netsh process window
• Fix: Speed graph dotted lines on Win9x
• Fix: Speed graph left legend alignment on Win9x
• Fix: Handling of relative paths when moving torrent file to completed folder
• Fix: persist current initial-seed piece in settings

• Feature: setup Teredo automatically (requires IPv6)
• Feature: automatic unchoke intervals based on piece size
• Fix: Support relative paths in torrent storage location and other user entered paths
• Fix: Installation of shortcuts and various other issues

Changes in version 1.8 alpha (build 7135)

• Feature: skip hashchecking sparse sections of sparse files (greatly improves check speed)
• Change: With custom main.ico files, uTorrent now explicitly loads the system menu-sized icon (fixing some alt-tab and other oversizing issues that have existed since at least 1.6)
• Change: Help menu option now downloads utorrent-help.zip directly from website and obtains the help file form the zip file
• Change: Display infinity for up/download limits in transfer tab if there is none set for them
• Fix: Enabling of shutdown privileges so that autoshutdown works

Changes in version 1.8 alpha (build 7118)

• Change: "#" sorts by "completed on" for seeding torrents
• Change: "eta" sorts by "completed on" for seeding torrents (and "completed on" sorts by "eta" for download torrents)
• Change: Layout of "Save in:" column in RSS filter tab to match others with "..." buttons
• Fix: crash bug with relevance column and metadata mode
• Fix: directories left behind by Delete + Data to trash
• Fix: prio_first_last_piece would overlap adjacent files more than needed
• Fix: ETA miscalc with bottlenecked torrents
• Fix: Font scaling on vista with non-default DPI
• Fix: Tab order of advanced tab in torrent properties

Yeah, mijn crappy Thomson-ding kun je ook vrij eenvoudig 'choken' door teveel verbindingen.

Maar los daarvan gebruik ik sinds de MPAA-FUD in combinatie met µTorrent toch maar Halite. Bevalt prima.

Kan zijn dat de default # van connections allowed bij µTorrent anders staat dan bij ABC, toch?

Yeah, mijn crappy Thomson-ding kun je ook vrij eenvoudig 'choken' door teveel verbindingen.

Zet je Thomson in PPTP mode en hang er een echte router achter. Dan heb je nergens last van.

Meh nee, ik cap de max connections wel 't Helpt ook niet echt dat 't een shared ding is, ben dus niet de enige die zo nu en dan torrentjes open heeft staan ^^

Heel mooi progje. Codering is nice en gebruik van IPfilter is simpel!
Daarnaast heel weinig geheugengebruik.

storend dat het µTorrent (microtorrent) heet en de site www.utorrent.com is ipv www.mtorrent.com.

Op een of andere manier knikkert uTorrent altijd mijn internetverbinding eruit, terwijl bijv. ABC dit niet doet. Even kijken of dat bij deze versie verholpen is..

Wellicht komt dit door het aantal connections?

Dat ligt ZEKER niet aan uTorrent. Dat is met zekerheid de router die de geest geeft. Er zijn 2 opties:

• je koopt een betere router, mijn Draytek Vigor is top maar wel erg duur
• je beperkt het aantal gelijktijdige verbindingen (in uTorrent)

Als je bij een kabelaar zit zou het ook nog aan je modem kunnen liggen maar daar heb ik geen ervaring mee. Mijn @home modem bleef altijd wel in de lucht.

Ik had dat ook nog, toen we nog een wat trager internet abbo hadden thuis. Nu is het een stuk sneller en heb ik er alleen last van als utorrent op de max aan het downloaden is.

Misschien is ABC ingesteld op 100 connections, utorrent op 200 connections, wat de router misschien niet trekt, zoals al gezegd. Dan ligt het aan de INSTELLING in utorrent, en niet aan utorrent zelf.

Sowieso blijft het gissen naar zijn probleem

hoe zit dat nu? Zit er MPAA afluistersoftware in? Is het veilig om de nieuwste versies van µTorrent te gebruiken?

Waarschijnlijk zijn er mensen die elke keer als er een nieuwe versie uitkomt al het netwerkverkeer wat utorrent genereert nakijkt op 'onthullende' informatie e.d. Als het ontdekt wordt, wordt het waarschijnlijk gelijk op t.net gemeldt en komt het onder de noemer 'spyware' ipv 'freeware', en wordt dat elke keer in de commentaren gemeldt.
