Software-update: DriveImage XML 1.00

De ontwikkelaars van Runtime Software hebben DriveImage XML 1.00 uitgebracht. Het programma is in staat om images aan te maken van partities en logische drives in het XML-formaat. Het maakt gebruik van de Volume Shadow Services van Microsoft waardoor je zo genaamde hot-images kan aanmaken. De data kan dus normaal gebruikt worden wanneer je hier een image van aanmaakt. Ondersteuning voor indelingen met FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 en natuurlijk NTFS is aanwezig. DriveImage XML wordt als volgt beschreven door de ontwikkelaars:

DriveImage XML is an easy to use and reliable program for imaging and backing up partitions and logical drives. The program allows you to:

• Backup logical drives and partitions to image files
• Browse these images, view and extract files
• Restore these images to the same or a different drive
• Copy directly from drive to drive

Image creation uses Microsoft's Volume Shadow Services (VSS), allowing you to create safe "hot images" even from drives currently in use.

Images are stored in XML files, allowing you to process them with 3rd party tools. Never again be stuck with a useless backup!

Restore images to drives without having to reboot.

DriveImage XML runs under Windows XP Home and XP Professional only. The program will backup, image and restore drives formatted with FAT 12, 16, 32 and NTFS.

Waarom enkel XP

Is bijzonder spijtig: hot-imaging zou voor veel servers een leuk iets zijn. Een fuller dan full backup

Jammer genoeg lijkt het niet compatible met VMWare Player.
Lijkt me erg handig om backups te kunnen maken van bestaande pc's en die vervolgens virtueel te kunnen draaien op andere pc's (of dezelfde...). Vooral handig voor bestaande servers. VMWare kan dat (en de Player zelfs gratis) maar ik ken eigenlijk geen programma's die een bestaande pc kunnen omzetten naar een virtuele.
Nou ja, ik ken er twee: VMWare heeft daar een Enterprise tool voor, evenals Symantec. Maar die zijn beiden niet zomaar te krijgen of kopen.

Ziet er leuk uit maar voor mij helaas nog geen oplossing. Het is wéér een single file oplossing, dus als dat ene grote bestand kapot is, ben je meteen alle data kwijt. Stel je bent een backup aan het maken en tijdens die bewerking loopt je pc vast, dan is de backup ook meteen onbruikbaar.
