China has built a vast network of detention camps in the north west region of Xinjiang, as part of its campaign of oppression against Turkic Muslims. It is believed that more than a million people have been detained. Our team used satellite imagery, architectural analysis and eyewitness interviews to uncover the camp network and investigate what was happening there.

Alison KillingJournalist, architect and digital media producer | Killing Architects Alison Killing is a Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist and licenced architect. In 2021, together with Megha Rajagopalan and Christo Buschek, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for a series of articles using satellite imagery to expose a network of detention camps in Xinjiang, China. Her reporting continues to focus on Xinjiang, as well as on broader issues of surveillance and migration. Previous projects include "Migration Trail," a mapped data visualization about migration to Europe. She also produced and curated an exhibition on death and architecture called Death in Venice and carried out research on the reconstruction in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake. |
