Yamaha Waveforce 192 review

The Waveforce 192 uses Sensaura to implement DirectSound 3D. Sensaura technology creates a 3D sound field using conventional two-speaker stereo playback systems. It also includes direction, height and distance information in processed or recorded audio, such that the sounds heard by the listener appear to extend beyond the stereo loudspeakers. Realize that this card does not provide the ability to use four speakers; however, not all gamers have the space to set up four speakers for their system. Using two speakers or headphones, the Waveforce did an admirable job of rendering 3D sound. It was somewhat difficult to get a feeling for distance behind you from a sound, but quite a number of things did actually feel like they were coming from behind. With any sound sources that came from the sides around to the front, positioning was perfect, and the echo and reverb effects made a huge difference. With Sensaura's support for EAX (Creative Lab's Environmental Audio Extensions), you could hear the echoes of your footsteps change depending on the room you walked through in Half-Life. In Unreal, I almost felt the shells from the AutoMag flying over my head as they ejected. Jedi Knight (the three-level demo version is included in the retail package) was awesome and realistic as well.

TNT Tweak Guide

Overclocking the RIVA TNT probably has biggest effect on performance. But before you overclock, make sure you cool the RIVA TNT sufficiently! Passive solutions like heatsinks alone are not good enough. Improve on the card's passive cooling solution by adding a fan or two to cool the card further. For more information on cooling such BGA chips, please check out the Cooling BGA/PQFP Chips guide.

SOYO SY-6VZA review

I have two Celeron 300's that will run at Front Side Bus speeds in excess of 100MHz. Neither processor would even boot on this mother board at 100Mhz FSB. They would run stable at 83MHz but not the magic 100MHz. Both processors have been tested and verified at higher bus speeds.

I did not consult with SOYO tech support on this. I tweaked my ass off for a solid day and a half trying to get this mutha to boot up at 450 with the 300A. Time constraints have kept me from waiting a week for help from SOYO. I did consult a couple other hardware freako's that had some VIA experience. They, in their own way, confirmed my suspicions....

AnandTech's engineering sample of the Pentium III was not frequency locked (although all purchased chips will be) and therefore allowed AnandTech to push the limits of the CPU. It's definitely unfortunate that Intel chose to frequency lock the Pentium III, as the Pentium III 500 made it up to 560MHz (112MHz x 5.0) without a single crash, and with a little tweaking 585MHz (117MHz x 5.0) was possible as well, albeit not as stable. Shortly Intel will be releasing the Pentium III at clock speeds greater than 500MHz, making the 560MHz benchmarks here a hopeful indication of performance to come...

Jakkes!

It’s only a few weeks ago when 3Dfx announced that there will be three different Voodoo3 chips or cards, the Voodoo3 2000 will still stay the same as announced at Comdex 1998, running the chip and the memory at 125 MHz and thus not being a great performer, but Voodoo3 3000 will now come with reduced specs, 166 MHz for chip and memory clock while Voodoo3 3500 takes over the specs of the previously annonced Voodoo3 3000, with 183 MHz chip and memory clock. This seems a bit odd already, making it look as if 3Dfx is not getting a good yield of 183 MHz parts, so that the majority of Voodoo3 chips will only run at the 166 MHz clock and the 183 MHz chips will only be available in limited numbers. 3Dfx is also facing the fact that there’s hardly any memory that runs at 183 MHz, which complicates things additionally.
