Scalability across a variety of hardware is the major challenge facing technology programmers of 3D games. There are already many ways to deal with scalability of fill rate (such as supporting lower resolutions), but geometry scalability is much more difficult. 3D cards with hardware T&L give us more options in this regard, and increase the high end performance of our games in more interesting ways than fill rate does. Hardware T&L is the next big advance in 3D card technology. Anti-aliasing is a very desirable feature, but its impact on 3D games is not as broad.
