Extreme Hardware E3 report

On Thursday I stopped by Aureal’s booth to further talk about the promised driver updates that we’ve been hearing about recently. As some of you may be aware, Aureal released beta drivers about two weeks ago with support for 32 simultaneous hardware voices (on two-speaker/headphone output, not four-speaker output). However, the real driver update that everyone’s been waiting for is the Vortex 2’s promised EAX support. While I couldn’t get a firm date out of them, Aureal is planning to ship an update to A3D 2.0 in June/July. This update will not change the performance or quality on Vortex 2 boards, rather it will increase the compatibility of lower quality sound cards. Aureal has added a reverb engine that will work on any sound card. What kind of reverb that is generated and how it is processed whether it be in hardware or software, it will depend on the sound card that is being used. In with this new reverb support, there will be full support for EAX on both SoundBlaster and Vortex 2 sound cards.
