Voor het uitwisselen van bestanden zijn er in de loop van de tijd verschillende netwerken en applicaties ontwikkeld, zoals het Gnutella-netwerk waarop een aantal verschillende applicaties actief zijn. Phex maakt gebruik van dit netwerk en wordt geschreven in Java, daardoor draait het onder andere op systemen met Windows, Mac OS X, Linux of Solaris. Het programma heeft ondersteuning voor multi-source downloads, Ultrapeers, Bitzi metadata lookup en MAGMA. Wie benieuwd is naar het uiterlijk kan hier een aantal screenshots bekijken van het programma in actie. De ontwikkelaars hebben versie 2.6.0 de deur uitgedaan met de volgende aankondiging:
This release of Phex focuses again on improved download reliability. Many measures were taken to reduce the risk of lost or broken downloads. Additionally Phex started to integrate improved file verification, once fully implemented it will allow us to identify and correct possible download errors better. To work around Windows XP SP2 limitations and reduce the number of failed connection attempts Phex now throttles concurrent connects on XP SP2. Read this article for more info.
