Intel Foster sneak preview

Conclusion

According to our tests, the development of Foster has been a step in the right direction for Xeon-class processors. Intel has obviously learned from the mistakes that have been made at the time of the Pentium III, and the new generation of Xeons has its own place on the market. By taking the dual-processing ability out of the desktop chips, high-end workstation users will always have to get a Xeon, which will cause bigger sales than ever for the Xeon processors. While the Foster will of course be more expensive than the Pentium 4, the extra money is partly justified by Jackson Technology and the faster i860 chipset. This justification is hard to find when looking at the current generation of Xeon processors (at least the ‘light’ ones). The improvements that the Xeon has made over the Pentium 4 are very obvious, but we’re pretty sure that these will play a more important role in the future, especially when commonly used server software is optimised for these new technologies.

Xeon logoWhat the exact price of the new Xeon will be isn’t clear yet, but with the price of the Pentium 4 falling rapidly at this moment, it is quite possible that the Foster DP will be released at the same price as the one at which the Pentium 4 is currently selling. With big names like SuperMicro and Tyan behind the mainboards it won’t be difficult to build attractive CAD/CAM workstations based on two Fosters. This brings us to another point, because there is another company that has a solution for dual-processor workstations in the making.

The AMD 760MP chipset will be released at the same time as the Palomino processor, probably before Foster and the i860. We can expect that a system with two Palomino processors is somewhat cheaper than a dual Foster setup. Moreover, Palomino will have some improvements to the core and will probably be performing a bit better than the current Athlon. However, the choice of mainboards and chipsets will be bigger on the Intel side, and big companies that don’t trust a newcomer like AMD will certainly not work to the advantage of the Palomino, too. Furthermore, AMD is far from the scalability of Intel. Designing dual Socket A mainboards is already a complex task because of the point-to-point bus, let alone designing them with two or four times as many processors. We still don’t know what exactly the AMD 760MPX chipset is, but we do know that Intel isn’t waiting for AMD to make the next move at this point. Also, there are no official plans of AMD to release Athlons with a larger cache.

The future of Foster depends, among others, on the 870 chipset from Intel. With this chipset, systems consisting of up to 512 processors can be built, in subclusters of four. This chipset will support both RDRAM and DDR SDRAM. At the same time that the Pentium 4 will receive its Northwood core, Foster will get a new 0,13 micron revision too. This core, codenamed ‘Prestonia’, will be released together with the Plumas DDR chipset.

Of course our thanks go out to our anonymous source, who let us use this system while endangering his own life . Thanks a lot and keep up the good work .

Great article.

The submission to Slashdot is in progress.
Keep up the good work!

Let's see how 'our' humble ( ;)) servers are able to handle the famous /. effect, last time we weren't able to serve you guests correctly. I've heard the crew worked hard and you are all quite welcome :)

To the t.net crew: Great scoop! Well done guys.

Looks like the database server skips some times, annoying when using the forum.

The /. effect is really slashing up the servers }>
:Y)

Maybe it's an idea to drop registration (which is Dutch) on articles like this so English viewers can give their opinion

First of all: Well done Wouter & Arjan !! Very interesting article. I read both the Dutch and the English version, translation has been done very well imo.

havana:
I think that's a very good idea... BUT... How can we controll spam, flamebaits and trolls if one doesn't have to register? At /. they let Anonymous Cowards post default at a lower level, but I don't think that suits the purpose here.
Maybe the people of Tweakers.Net should make up their mind, and try to decide if they want to become an international site or stay national. As I see it, nationally we won't get very much bigger than this. On the other hand, I don't think it would be realistic to think that the whole site could be translated. But at least there should be added an English version of the static info and T.net's own articles.

Posting without registration doesn't mean registrered members can't moderate those reactions. So flamebaits etc. wil be moderated :)

That's not my point. It's more about the ability to ban or to alarm their ISP if needed.
I also try to make clear that with the quality of a site like Tweakers.Net, I find it strange that so little is being done for foreign visitors.
If the problem is that nobody wants to translate the F.A.Q. or static pages ... jelle@vanderpal.com?Subject=Vertalen van stukjes T.net" target="_blank :) Would be good for me to keep my English up2date :P

Several key problems with "going" international. I have sincere doubts that Vuurwerk will have interest if Tweakers.net will reach a wider, international audience. This is for the main reason thier target group lies elsewhere, they have no business trying to get foreign sys-admins impressed by the quality of their hosting, and the reliability.
One can see the Dutch market as a niche market (there is a clear limit to how big you can become) but it does have several key advantages. The amount of queries done with a page request on /. is something like 3, compared to 10 per page request here at Tweakers, due to the dynamic layout of the page. A feature which you would have to lose, if you are trying to get more traffic, more bandwith, and still run a company.
An idea for future scopes is to get a pre-generated page, and so not make it dynamic for each page request. The non-Dutch speaking visitors will not notice really that much, and it won't affect them either, they are not using many of the features offered, and they are not coming back till the next Tweakers scoop. By creating a more static page, you can reduce the workload for the server tremendously, and this is why /. runs a much "bigger" website (talking traffic here) with similar equipment.
Regards, Glottis

We're going a little off-topic here, but for the last 6 months or so (and I'm very sorry to say this), if there's one thing I'm not impressed with at all, it's the reliability and uptime of Tweakers.net and therefore of its servers and/or its host. Maybe Vuurwerk is not to blame for this and maybe the problem has its roots somewhere else (there's a lot of discussion going on on this subject), but the instability of this site is no longer an advert or p.r.-project for professionalism afaik. If Vuurwerk does this as a p.r.-project (and I do think that Tweakers.net could be used for this very well), maybe they could/should support them some more.

I'm just a regular visitor with no insights in the problems of hosting, server-maintenance or web-scripting/programming, etc. Maybe Vuurwerk's targeted sys-admins can see through all this and are not distracted by the ongoing problems. But as a regular visitor and PC-user I can not. I do know they're working on this and certainly do hope that problems will be resolved soon, because this young site (not only the the site is young, but the management and most of its visitors as well), deserves an uptime of 24/7/365 :).

You are right about the downtime recently of Tweakers.net The problem lies less with the connection offered by Vuurwerk, but more by the hardware and associated problems of the servers.
The servers are property of Tweakers.net, and are sponsored by several other companies, such as AMD, and Comptech World. It was a hardware/software conflict, not an internet connection problem (so the host is not to blaim as far as I know ;) ) Vuurwerk hosts Tweakers.net, which generates about 5TB of traffic per month due to its popularity (and those scoops are not helping ;) ).
I have to agree that downtime for Tweakers.net also affects Vuurwerk's image, so they should do the hosting all the way (or stop, but that is not an option, I would stop hosting my website by Vuurwerk if I had one, really).
