NS operates at the heart of Dutch society. Every day, we take our passengers wherever they
need to go, using one of the busiest railway networks in the world, the most complete travel
planner in the Netherlands, and of course, our bike-sharing system, which is the largest in the
world! We need talented people in all our departments to make sure that our trains run on time,
the travel planner works as it should, the rental bikes are ready and waiting, and the stations are
clean. About 1400 IT consultants work at NS, spread over five large departments and numerous
sub-departments. They use programming languages like Java, Angular, Mendix, HTML, Python,
Xamarin and C#. You might be wondering what an IT consultant does at NS. Well, quite a lot! For
instance, before our passengers board a train, they get a ticket from an intuitive ticket machine.
They then check the digital travel boards to see if their train has nearly arrived and plan their
route with the travel planner app. In the meantime, they check in with their mobile phone and use
Wi-Fi once they’re on the train. Most people don’t realize how many complex IT systems have to
be designed, built and fine-tuned to make all of these technological feats possible. That’s what
our IT consultants do, every day. They devise and realize smart solutions.
As an NS IT consultant, you’ll have a major impact on our passengers. Whether you’re
developing an app or working on the functional management of our workstations, it's all done for
our passengers. Because whatever your role is at NS, the traveller comes first. And we’re not
done yet, not by a long shot. In the next few years, there will be plenty of wonderful opportunities
to develop your skills while working on interesting projects. In other words, plenty of opportunities.
It’s one of the reasons you can’t plot your career at NS from start to finish. We think it's important
to support your development, so that you can get the best out of yourself. Your skills, ideas and
commitment allow you to think outside the box at NS, and make a real difference. One thing you
should be aware of, is that, although this text is written in English, most jobs at NS require you to
have a good command of the Dutch language. In conclusion: whatever your role is at NS, you are
indispensable for the journeys of today, tomorrow and beyond.
Tomorrow’s journey starts with you.
