Embedded Electronics Engineer

  • 32-40
  • Heerenveen,

You start your day with a cup of coffee and open the electrical schematic of a new measuring instrument. This instrument must soon function flawlessly under harsh conditions. You have come up with the design, chosen components, drawn the layout and coordinated with suppliers. Today you are working on the software: how do you capture low-noise signals, how do you ensure robust communication, and how do you detect deviations at the right time?

During a brief consultation with production, you discuss a deviation in the final test. Together you dive into the measurement data. The cause appears to be a current loop that is just outside specification. You walk along to the test setup to investigate it immediately.

After lunch you work on a new firmware version and test it on a prototype. The communication now appears to be more stable - a big step forward for offshore applications. Later, you briefly call a supplier about a new hardware circuit. In our small team, you have a lot of influence and switch quickly.

As an Embedded Electronics Engineer, you are responsible for the entire process - from concept and design to test and implementation. You develop printed circuit boards, write embedded software and ensure that everything works seamlessly together. Even if the system has to function dozens of meters underground or kilometers below sea level.

Our systems are used worldwide for geotechnical investigations. Think of CPTs, offshore systems on drilling vessels and test rigs where everything is about accuracy, reliability and robust communication. You are the one who controls measurement electronics down to the bit and volt.

No day is the same, but what does recur every day: you are the engineer who brings technology to life - with care, teamwork, insight, and a good sense of detail.

We will first introduce ourselves:

We are , an innovative family business based in Heerenveen, the Netherlands, that designs, builds and supplies CPT equipment for onshore, offshore and nearshore ground surveys. Our customers are spread all over the world. We are continuously working on innovations in the field of CPT equipment. The equipment, instruments, software, etc. are completely developed and made in-house. Our company consists of about 70 employees and the company culture is characterized by: pride in your work, respect for each other, working together and continuing to learn and adapt. We are growing in various areas. We don't do crazy things, but we are far from standing still. Not in our products, but not in our operations either.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for an Embedded Electronics Engineer who oversees the whole picture, from schematic to software, from old-fashioned signal paths to modern communication layers. Someone who doesn't shy away from "debugging" implemented designs and is just as eager to set up a new digital environment.

You have an affinity for measurement electronics and understand the importance of robustness, accuracy and reliability in systems that must perform under harsh conditions. You are open to developing into a true measurement equipment specialist.

You are curious, solution-oriented and feel at home in a compact team where you bear responsibility for the entire design process. You are not afraid to roll up your sleeves in production or support if necessary.

As a Embedded Electronics Engineer:

As an Embedded Electronics Engineer you are responsible for the design, optimization and maintenance of embedded measurement systems used in geotechnical research - often under harsh conditions, worldwide.

Your tasks include:

  • Develop and improve industrial embedded systems: from schematics and PCB to back-end software.
  • Maintain and extend configuration and test tools used in production, calibration and validation.
  • Further develop existing designs into robust, modern solutions.
  • Working on communication protocols.
  • Thinking along on software & system architecture, signal processing, error detection and data security.
  • Developing yourself as a specialist in measurement equipment. Thinking along about accreditations, certifications, calibration, training and customer questions regarding both product and measurement setups.
  • Supporting colleagues in production, assembly and service - whether debugging a hardware problem or analyzing a customer failure.

You work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities independently and have a keen eye for quality and reliability. You understand why good data is crucial, and you always think one step ahead when it comes to reliability, reproducibility and serviceability.

Who are you?

We are looking for an engineer with technical insight as well as a practical attitude. Someone who enjoys both applying new technologies and making existing systems more robust.

You preferably have:

  • A completed college or university degree in Electronics, Embedded Systems, Technical Computer Science or similar.
  • Experience with electronics and firmware system development (STM32, AT mega is a big plus), and affinity with both digital and analog circuits.
  • Knowledge of C (and/or C++), microcontroller interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C), and 'debug' tools (JTAG, ATMEL-ICE, etc.).
  • Understanding of serial communications, preferably experience with RS485 and industrial protocols.
  • Experience with Docker, Javascript, SQL, APIs, GitLab and working with CI/CD workflows is a plus.
  • Interest in signal processing, robust hardware design, EMC and precision measurement systems.
  • Good command of both Dutch and English in word and writing.

Do you recognize yourself in this - and would you like to work on technology that literally goes to ground? Then we would like to meet you.

With whom and for whom do you work?

At you will be working in a multidisciplinary team of enthusiastic professionals, who enjoy working on innovative developments. The Engineering department consists of 15 colleagues. You work a lot independently, but also cooperate with your colleagues, for example in the field of front- and backend. You will also have regular contact with our production department and customers around the world to provide technical support and training. You will report to the Head of Engineering & Development.

Are you excited and curious about what we can offer you? Then please read more about this unique position below.
