Ready to turn quantum computing into real-world impact? In this role, you will work hands-on with researchers to design and build quantum applications, integrate them into existing systems, and help bring this emerging technology into practice. Your work will shape how quantum computing is used in research.
Where you will work
SURF is the collaborative IT organisation for Dutch education and research. Working together with academic and research institutions, SURF develops and delivers IT infrastructure and drives digital innovation. SURF is a pioneer in classical network technology and a leading provider of network and High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure for the Dutch research and education community.
One of our focus areas is the application of quantum technology for scientific research and education, ensuring that users of SURF's infrastructure continue to have access to world-class facilities and expertise. In this way, we support the Netherlands in maintaining its position at the forefront of global research and education.

You'll work within SURF's Future Technologies & Applications team - a group that explores and experiments with cutting-edge technologies and assesses their impact for education and research. We drive strategic initiatives across the ecosystem, and we give our people the freedom to do the same. What you will do
As a Quantum Computing Advisor, together with our users and members, you will develop quantum technology infrastructure and define use cases and applications. This hands-on work allows us to identify bottlenecks and requirements in quantum computing, while also advancing knowledge in this rapidly evolving field. Your work will help the Netherlands continue to innovate.
- Collaborate with researchers to translate domain-specific questions into potential quantum computing applications
- Design, implement, test, and validate applications and software tools
- Integrate solutions into existing computational and HPC workflows
- Increase the visibility and impact of quantum applications within the research community
- Contribute to shaping the quantum computing vision and strategy at SURF
- Support the deployment and integration of the quantum computer with the National Supercomputer
- Help bring quantum technology into operational service environments
- Present results and share insights at national and international events
- Supervise internships and BSc/MSc student projects
Your skills and experience
- MSc or PhD in a technical discipline (e.g. electrical engineering, physics, or computer science)
- Knowledge of quantum algorithms and experience developing quantum applications
- Experience with programming languages such as Python or C
- Familiarity with quantum software frameworks (e.g. Qiskit, PennyLane, Qulacs) is a plus
- Knowledge and experience with quantum computing hardware is a plus
- Familiarity with HPC infrastructure is a plus
- Ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical applications
- Interest in advancing the quantum ecosystem in the Netherlands and Europe
- Curiosity and enthusiasm for emerging fields and new opportunities
- A strong sense of initiative and the ability to work independently
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to tailor your message to different audiences
