Wanted: Linux/Devops Engineer

(and a little bit of Windows)

Wanted: Linux/Devops Engineer

We are BIT: a down-to-earth, friendly IT company full of smart people who get their energy from technology, open source, sustainability and honest collaboration. From our own datacenters, we build and operate autonomous, privacy-conscious cloud and infrastructure solutions for the business market. And we're looking for someone who is just as enthusiastic about GNU/Linux, automation and reliable infrastructure as we are.

What you'll be doing

As a Linux Engineer, you will work at the very heart of our services: stable, secure and sovereign cloud and infrastructure platforms. You ensure that both our own platforms and those of our customers continue to run smoothly. You will not be working in a single, standard environment, but across a broad mix of environments and architectures.

Our customers are almost always technically skilled professionals: system administrators, developers and IT teams within organisations. You will therefore not be providing end-user support, but engaging at a technical level with people who know what they are talking about.

You contribute ideas for improvements, automate wherever possible, and regularly coordinate with fellow engineers. Where necessary, you also involve Customer Care or Sales in technical decisions.

In addition, you will be on call for incidents 2 to 3 times per month, from 08:30 to 08:30. During these shifts, you are available for issues that genuinely cannot wait, although these duties are fortunately usually very quiet. Naturally, appropriate compensation is provided.

Your work will include:

  • managing, developing and optimising our Linux and cloud environments (both internal and customer platforms).
  • analysing and resolving technical issues (from Linux kernel to application level).
  • automating configuration management using Ansible.
  • helping to build storage and virtualisation platforms (Ceph, QEMU/KVM, OpenNebula).
  • improving dashboards and monitoring with InfluxDB, Telegraf and Grafana.
  • advising customers on projects, architectures and possibilities.
  • contributing to internal tooling, scripts and documentation.

On a daily basis, you'll work with (part of) our stack:

  • Ubuntu GNU/Linux (we are the official NL mirror)
  • Ansible
  • Git
  • Ceph
  • QEMU/KVM
  • OpenNebula
  • Bash and Python
  • InfluxDB, Grafana, Telegraf
  • Raspberry Pi and other SoCs
  • PostgreSQL, MySQL, MSSQL
  • Windows Server & Active Directory

Missing knowledge? No problem. Enthusiasm and a healthy curiosity matter to us at least as much.

Who are you?

You enjoy working with Linux, cloud infrastructure and automation. You like helping customers and can clearly explain technical decisions. You enjoy working as part of a team, but are equally comfortable working independently. We are looking for someone with higher professional (degree-level) working and thinking ability, but demonstrable knowledge and skills are far more important to us than any formal qualification.

See if this sounds like you:

  • You have demonstrable experience with Linux environments.
  • You are analytical, curious and solution-oriented.
  • You have a passion for open source, cloud and automation.
  • You communicate clearly, in both Dutch and English.
  • You are comfortable working in diverse technical environments and quickly pick up the quirks of new systems.
  • You do not mind being on call a few times each month.

What do we offer?

We make sure you can do your job well and enjoy it. You will receive:

  • A salary of up to €4,000 per month, depending on knowledge and experience.
  • Flexible working hours and the option to work partly from home.
  • Real influence over both technical and organisational decisions.
  • The opportunity to place your own server in our datacenter (or run a VM).
  • 30 days of annual leave and an excellent pension scheme. BIT pays your pension in full, with no personal contribution.
  • A daily organic lunch at the office.
  • Access to our gym, a monthly chair massage, and friendly colleagues.
