Symantec heeft voor zijn Endpoint Encryption-producten de zesde maintenance pack uitgebracht, waarmee het versienummer op 8.2.1 MP6 komt te liggen. Endpoint Encryption bestaat uit twee smaken, die samen te gebruiken zijn: Full Disk en Removable Storage. De eerste richt zich op het versleutelen van interne harde schijven van een systeem; de tweede richt zich op het versleutelen van data die op een verwijderbaar opslagmedium staat, zoals een usb-drive of cd/dvd. Waarom zou je dit verkiezen boven bijvoorbeeld truecrypt? Ik zie niks bijzonders of wat truecrypt ook niet kan en dat is opensource. Hier valt niet te zien of de encryptie implementatie deugd.
Ik denk dat het komt omdat erg veel bedrijven en consumenten niet weten wat Opensource en dat associŰren met amateur knutsel werk, niet veilig omdat iedereen er wat aan kan veranderen etc etc. Die hebben meer vertrouwen in een gesloten systeem wat van een software fabrikant afkomt, wat ze niet weten of die fabrikant werkelijk zo integer is om geen achterdeurtjes erin te programmeren, dus in principe is dit soort software veel gevaarlijker dan Opensource software, ondanks dat fabrikanten en consumenten precies het tegenovergestelde denken.
Evenzo gevaarlijk is de heersende aanname dat 'omdat het opensource is, gecontroleerd is of er geen backdoors zijn'. Dat is niet ge´mpliceerd, wie weet is het vernuftig erin verwerkt, niemand leest de code volledig door. De kans is aanwezig, groot zelfs, dat het doorgenomen wordt - maar niet ge´mpliceerd.
Heeft truecrypt een centrale management server / raporteer mogelijkheid om te zien welke devices zich aan de policy houden / policies pushen naar de clients? Voor thuisgebruik is het inderdaad goedkoper om truecrypt te kiezen (al is de verplichte recovery iso/cd wel lastig bij truecrypt voordat je disk kan encrypten). Voor grotere bedrijven heb je toch wat meer beheersmogelijkheden nodig wat je volgens mij bij truecrypt zelf niet krijgt. Dan kom je toch eerder bij Symantec (SEE of PGP), McAfee (SafeBoot), Sophos (SafeGuard), etc. uit.
